

They consume seeds, desert shrubs and grasses. The take shelter in burrows from the heat during daily light hours and become active nocturnally. The Spiny Pocket Mouse are found within boulders, washes, rocky slopes, coarse soil and sparse vegetation. They range in length from 16.4 cm (6.5 inches) to 22.5 cm (8.9 inches) and 13 g (0.46 oz) and 18 g (0.63 oz) in weight. They vary in color based on location but are generally a drab brown dorsally transitioning to tan on the sides with the spines having black tips. They have small round ears and long tails that are slightly longer than their head and body. These spines differentiate it from other pocket mice in other genera.
